SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT THE APPEARANCE OF MY LAWN DURING FALL AND WINTER?

Posted by Stephanie Morgan on November 30, 2020 @ 9:00 am PST

As the long, hot summer draws to a close, it may seem like fall and winter are the perfect times to take a much-needed break from lawn maintenance. It’s easy to let lawncare fall by the wayside as your focus turns from carefree summer fun to the regular, busy routines of life…inevitably, as fall progresses and the holidays approach, there will be even more distractions vying for your attention. Nevertheless, it is very important to prioritize the appearance of your lawn during fall and winter – the benefits of doing so go much deeper than meets the eye.

Remove Leaves

Boost the curb appeal of your home and keep your grass healthy and strong…simultaneously! Heavy leaf cover on the lawn can prevent sunlight from getting through, create a barrier to much-needed moisture, and lead to conditions that could foster fungi and disease. Grab a good, old-fashioned rake and get to work – using a traditional rake will clear the leaves and as well as any excessive thatch build-up. Bonus: Create sweet memories and a fun fall photo op by letting the kids or pets jump in the pile!

Keep Mowing

As long as it’s growing, keep on mowing! This will keep your lawn looking clean-cut and well cared for, as well as offer a host of benefits not visible to the naked eye. Keeping the grass cut until it goes dormant prepares it for the winter months. Shorter grass allows more sunlight through to the soil, gives less places for rodents and garden pests to hide, and lets the blades “stand up” to rain and snow! Shorter blades are less likely to develop diseases that may result from matted grass blades that have been folded over the crown.

Remove Weeds

Who knew winter weeds could be such a problem!? Not only does it look terrible when the lawn is overrun with weeds, but an invasion of weeds can lead to detrimental long-term effects on your grass. Applying pre-emergent treatment in the fall as well as post-emergent treatment to those weeds that have already snuck their way in will undoubtedly improve the appearance or your lawn and will foster a healthier environment for grass to receive nutrients and have more space to grow. It’s a win-win situation, really – taking control of weeds in the fall and winter will help your lawn look amazing and (bonus!) set the stage for a healthy, lush, green lawn to grow in the spring!

Keep It Clean

Toys, kiddie pools, lawn furniture, logs for the firepit…all have a tendency to accumulate on the grass during a fun-filled summer. If you notice your neatly manicured lawn is starting to resemble a junk yard, start cleaning! Removing debris from the yard will be pleasing to the eye as well as profitable for the health of your grass. Heavy, water-filled kiddie pools can bend and break blades, creating dead spots where it could be difficult to grow healthy grass in the future. Logs that get wet in autumn rains can retain moisture and lead to fungi or other diseases that could attack the grass. Being intentional about keeping the grass clear of debris will lead to a peaceful, unobstructed lawn, happy neighbors, and healthier grass.

We all know that looks aren’t everything – but when it comes to your lawn, you should definitely worry about its appearance during fall and winter months. Proper lawncare year-round will beautify your property and set it up for a healthy, successful, growth-filled spring!
